Well played, ABC3. Well played.
I’m actually lying in bed unable to sleep because of the emptiness I feel right now.
They killed Sammy.
I knew it was coming the second I saw the promo for the week, but I spent the week deluding myself into thinking they’d kill Ethan because they’d already put him on a bus to Barcelona. If they’d killed Ethan I’d be all ‘meh, shit happens.’
But NOOOOOOOO.
They go and kill the single reason I started watching Dance Academy! I watched the first episode of the first season on Good Friday night because my best friend would not shut up about the adorable gay guy. So I watched the first season in one weekend and grew so attached to Sammy it was ridiculous.
I saw his embarrassment when Miss Raine first made him dance en pointe. I saw him hopelessly in love with Abigail. I saw him admit he had feelings for his best friend. I saw his dad financially cut him off. I saw him try to support himself through the academy. I saw him finally get a boyfriend. I saw him win nationals at the Prix de Fonteyn. I saw him finally patch things up with his family.
Then he gets hit by a motherfucking car.
The sole reason I started watching this show; dead.
So thank you ABC3. Thank you for presenting me with the only fictional character I’ve actually loved and then cutting him out completely.
Now I’m going to lay in bed, listening to the Jezabels, and ponder the gaping hole you have just gouged into my soul.
Cheers cunts.
I will never listen to that song the same way again.
‘Easy to Love’ never used to be one of my favourite songs by the Jezabels. But now it’s been put into a completely new context for me by this solo.
Well I’ll never be able to listen to the Jezabels in the same way again…
Interracial Gay Teen Relationship without the usual supply of Gender-roles and Stereotypes, on a children’s show? On a Government owned Station?
And it appears to be a healthy relationship…
I have no idea what I missed, but my faith in TV is slowly starting to recover.
Excuse my excited Flail.
Nick’s Top 10 - February
Ok Tumblr, it’s time for this month’s top 10! Cue the fanfare! No? Ok then. Well anyhoo you all know the deal; I’ve reset the plays on my iPod after posting January’s top 10 in order to see what songs I’ve been digging this month. So here is my top 10 for February.
Professor Green - I Need You Tonight (feat. Ed Drewett)
I’ve had this song on my iPod for a while, but it’s just recently wormed its way into my head and apparently it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. This is the first single from British rapper Professor Green and it samples the INXS track ‘Need You Tonight’ and it’s a pretty good one. Despite the fact that they’ve taken a classic Aussie rock song and, in some peoples’ opinion, bastardised it, I think it’s great.
What I really like about this song is that it goes in a completely different direction than other generic rap songs about a guy and a girl. While most generally follow the formula of ‘rapper sees girl, hits on girl, and gets girl’, ‘I Need You Tonight’ is the exact opposite in almost painful extremes. For this song, Professor Green is essentially a dork, a love-sick puppy that can’t land the girl that keeps teasing him. I love it because it actually portrays guys in a perfectly realistic way; desperate for sex and completely lacking in willpower. Just look at the lyrics:
“I ain’t no idiot I’m pro, I’m no intermediate,
So next time she phones me, I ain’t even gonna pick up the phone to speak in it
*ring*
Nope, swear down.
*ring*
Wait a minute, that’s her now! (Hello?)
(I really wanna see you today…)
(Alright just gimme a time and a place and I’m there!)”
It’s easy to see that the whole song, and the video, is just the Professor poking a bit of fun at himself and guys in general, and this is what makes it such a fun song. What makes me laugh is that towards the end of the track he makes a point of saying ‘This is just a song, in real life this would never happen to me; I am a pimp. Women chase me, I do not chase women’.
While this single is all about him being absolutely useless with women, Professor Green does a complete 180 in his next single with Lily Allen; ‘Just Be Good To Green’, which pretty much chronicles him being a man-slut and making no promises to be faithful. Gotta love men.
Definitely have a listen to this song and watch the clip, they work well together in making a light-hearted and fun song.
Lana Del Rey - Born to Die
I’ve been incredibly slack with my updates this past week, so to make up for it my next post is about a lady who is pure awesomeness! American singer-songwriter Elizabeth Grant performs under the stage name ‘Lana Del Rey’ and this track; ‘Born to Die’ is the second to be released from her forthcoming album to be released January 27, which I am so ridiculously excited for.
To express my feelings in simple terms, I fucking love this song. Lana Del Rey’s voice is incredibly unique in my opinion, it has a raspy-ish quality to it but still flows very smoothly. She’s also a very talented songwriter, which is glaringly obvious with the lyrics to this song. The lyrics to ‘Born to Die’ come across as very dark and sombre, especially when coupled with the music itself, but there are moments where there appears to a be a lighter sentiment to Lana Del Rey’s words:
“Don’t make me sad, don’t make me cry,
Sometimes love is not enough and the world gets tough
I don’t know why.
Keep making me laugh, let’s go get high,
The road is long we carry on
Try to have fun in the meantime.”
You can’t deny that that is some good shit right there. Another of Lana Del Rey’s songs, ‘Video Games’, has the same feel towards it but I personally think that ‘Born to Die’ is so much better. One of the interesting things I find about Lana Del Rey is who she cites as her musical influences; Britney Spears, Kurt Cobain and Elvis Presley. What can only be described as a ridiculously eclectic mix of influences produced Lana Del Rey who describes herself as a ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’. Not quite sure what that means, but she’s awesome, so definitely check her out if you haven’t already.
